Lebanon Postpones Legislative Elections By 2 Years, Cites Iran War
Members of the Lebanese parliament on Monday took a decision that will allow them occupy their parliament seats beyond the constitutionally allowed end of their term.
The ongoing war involving Iran and Israel which began last week has left over half a million people in Lebanon displaced which had consequently made it difficult to hold legislative elections in large parts of the country.
The parliamentary elections were scheduled to hold in May this year.
76 legislators voted in favor of the decision to postpone the legislative elections during a plenary session on Monday, 41 lawmakers opposed it while 4 abstained.
Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war last week when Hezbollah attacked Israel in response to the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during US-Israeli strikes.
