LG Elections: It’s ‘Sweeping Victory’ For PDP In Adamawa, Delta … Senator Ede Dafinone Fumes
Delta state PDP earned a ‘sweeping victory’ in the local government elections held in the state on Saturday .
The party won 25 chairmanship and 499 councillorship seats in the local government elections that had ten political parties nominating candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
There are 500 wards and 25 local governments in the state and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) won in one of the wards in Oshimili North Local Government.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the Chief Electoral Officer and Chairman of Delta state Independent Electoral Commission, Dr Raphael Agbaike, announced the election results in Asaba on Sunday.
The PDP contested and won in 24 local governments while the party’s chairmanship candidate was elected unopposed in Udu local government.
‘The chairmanship candidate of the PDP in Udu Local Government was elected unopposed. The PDP candidates for councillorship positions contested and won 499 electoral wards while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) won one electoral ward in Oshimili North Local Government’ Dr Raphael said.
In Adamawa state , the PDP also had a sweeping victory in the local government elections that was held in the state on Saturday.
The party won all the 21 chairmanship positions and also won in all the 226 wards in the state except a ward in Demsa Local Government where the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate emerged as winner.
Chairman of the state Electoral Commission, Mohammed Umar, announced the election results on Sunday evening at the commission’s headquarters in Yola, the state capital.
Umar said 12 political parties participated in the local government elections
Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central, has however described the local government elections held in Delta state on Saturday as ‘a complete sham’ alleging that those who oversaw the local government elections in question have made a mockery of democratic ideals and standards.
‘It is very unfortunate that people at the grassroots level are prevented from participating in our democratic process by state governors to freely elect their councilors and council chairmen’ he said.
The senator also submitted that local governments in the country are still under the control of the state governors while disclosing that some APC candidates had actually withdrawn their candidacies.
‘Nigerians of goodwill must collectively work to amend the relevant sections of the constitution to rescue the local government system from the iron-fist of the state governors.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta sensed that the electoral umpire, Delta state Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), was not going to conduct credible elections as predicted, hence most of the party candidates withdrew from the polls.
It’s very unfortunate and sad how low our people can go to acquire power. It’s even more troubling that after 25 years in our democratic experiment we can’t conduct what looks like an election at the local government level.
What took place in Delta state on Saturday to all intents and purposes can’t be classified as an election. It’s a complete sham and an affront to all known democratic ideals. The state electoral umpire most probably acting on the instructions of the state Governor just allotted figures to candidates who took part in the shambolic process. It can at best be described as a mere coronation of all PDP-nominated candidates.
As predicted by political watchers that the Delta state PDP-led government is incapable of conducting free, fair, and credible elections, DSIEC proved all of us right. Because there were reports across the state that electoral materials, particularly result sheets, were not supplied to many polling units, and in some cases, wards where they consider strongholds of the opposition, voting materials were not supplied at all’ he alleged-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
