‘Most Distinctive’ Member Of Awolowo Family, Segun Awolowo, Dies At 62…President Tinubu, Gov Abdulrazaq, Saraki Offer Condolences

Grandson of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Mr Segun Awolowo, is dead.

He died on Thursday at the age of 62.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the Awolowo family announced the passing of the former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council in a statement on Thursday.

‘With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo.

He was the world’s most phenomenal husband, father and grandfather — steady, wise, endlessly loving, and the constant anchor of our family.

A painfully loyal servant to Nigeria, he dedicated his life to the service of his country with vision, integrity, passion, and unwavering commitment.

He was a true family man, a great friend, a wonderful servant of God, and a deeply beautiful human being.

He loved his family. He loved his work. He loved his country. And he lived every day with purpose, humility, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him.

We are shattered by this loss, but forever grateful for his life, his legacy, and the love he poured into all of us. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace’ the family submitted.

Segun Awolowo senior and Segun Awolowo junior

Late Segun Awolowo senior was the eldest son of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and he was also a lawyer like his father.

He however sadly died in a car crash on Lagos/Ibadan road on July 10, 1963.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo and 30 others were charged with treason in 1962, and the late Segun Awolowo, who was then 25 years old, was rushing from Ibadan to Lagos to defend his father when his car was involved in a road crash.

The saving grace was that 83-year-old Abbah Folawiyo was already pregnant and she later gave birth to Segun junior.

The award-winning fashion designer, Princess Abah Folawiyo later got married to late Alhaji Wahab Folawiyo.

The late Segun Awolowo junior was the most distinctive member of the Awolowo family.

He had a stupendously rich mother and stepfather and his father died while he was in the womb. His father was from a legendary political family, his grandfather was a lawyer, his father was a lawyer and he was also a lawyer.

President Bola Tinubu Offers His Condolences

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Mr Segun Awolowo while describing his death as unfortunate and a tragic loss ‘not only to the Awolowo family, but the entire country’.

The late Segun, the president added, distinguished himself as a scion of the Awolowo family.

‘Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour. Like his grandfather, he was a lawyer committed to defending truth and justice.

He made significant contributions to Nigeria. He served diligently as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, standing as the longest serving executive director of the agency in history.

My sympathy and condolences to his wife and children, the Awolowo family, and his mum, our own Sisi Abah Folawiyo.

I also commiserate with the governments and people of Ogun State, the entire Southwest geopolitical zone, and Nigeria, over this painful loss. May his soul rest in peace’ the president submitted.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has also offered his condolences submitting that he is heartbroken at the passing of Mr. Segun Awolowo Jr. who he called his friend and associate.

‘Segun was a great friend, a great public servant, and a jolly-good fellow whose company everyone cherished. His death is truly devastating, and he will be sorely missed for every good thing that he stood for’ the governor said.

He urged family, friends, and associates to be comforted by late Segun Awolowo’s fine legacies of excellent public service, his devotion to family and friends, and his service to the country at different times.

Governor Abdulrazaq also prayed that God will grant repose to Segun Awolowo’s soul and comfort his wife, children, and elderly mother.

Former Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki also noted that the late Segun Awolowo carried a legendary name without arrogance while calling him an astute lawyer.

‘Segun Awolowo was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He carried a legendary name without arrogance, and over the years, built his own reputation as an astute lawyer and a devoted public servant. For those of us who grew up with him, we will always remember his infectious smile and charisma.

His passing is a great loss not only to the illustrious family he represented but also to the nation he served so diligently.

On behalf of my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his mother, Hajiya Abah Folawiyo; his wife, Bola, and their children; the entire Awolowo family; and to all who mourn his loss.

We will miss you, Segun’ he submitted-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us? Do you want us to cover your event or programme? Kindly send SMS to 08035023079, 08059100286, 09094171980. Thank you
