NIPR President Delivers Keynote Speech At Workshop Held For Public Information Officers In Ilorin, Gives 7 Important Tips For Effective Information Management

President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Council (NIPR), Mr. Ike Neliaku on Tuesday talked about the qualities of a successful information manager and an information manager that has the needed problem-solving skills.
Mr Ike has also given what he considered as 7 most important tips for effective information management.
The NIPR president said this while delivering his keynote speech during the 2-day training programme on Strategic Communications held for public information managers in Kwara state on Tuesday.

The training programme was organized by the office of the state Head of Service in conjunction with the Triumph Corporate Ltd.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the training programme held at the Wingate Exotic, Tanke,Ilorin, had over 100 participants from across the ministries and MDAs in the State of Harmony.


Mr Ike ,who said it is important for attendees of training programmes to appreciate leaders who have felt it important to attach importance to creation of platforms for people to learn and relearn, added that it is important to make good use of every opportunity made available to learn new things.
Recalling what he learned while serving as personal aides of three former Ministers for Information, the NIPR President talked about how he learned how to create story and diffuse story , create tension and diffuse tension under Uche Chukumerije and persuasive Communication under Professor Jerry Gana.
Participants got engaged with enthusiasm as Mr Ike also talked about what he considered as seven most important tips for effective information management which are ; understanding your operating environment, understanding your stakeholders, understanding the value you offer, understanding what to design for your target audience, understanding that there is tomorrow, understanding the trends in your profession and understanding what you have passion for.


Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye , who gave a keynote speech on ‘How To Succeed As An Image-maker’ , noted that it is not about hard-and-fast rules adding that once a person understands the strategy that works for him or her, continuing with such is better.

He urged information officers to up their game by ensuring that they come up with press statements that are well-written, factual, timely and persuasive cognizant that what they have released to the public would be competing for space on pages of newspapers with press statements from 35 other states.
Since majority of the young people are according to him ‘digital naturals’ and have access to smart phones, Ajakaye also noted that there is a need for information officers to be digital-friendly .
He urged them to build good relationship with journalists and gain their trust noting that integrity will help in making journalists consider them as reliable and trusted news source.
CEO of Triumph Corporate Ltd, Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, said the programme was primarily designed for the participants to learn and relearn while submitting that the post-workshop period will witness more of engagements on social media ditto the traditional media.


He also emphasized the need for participants to learn and transfer knowledge to others.
Commissioner for Communications, Hon Bola Olukoju , who is a PR, Marketing, and Communications expert, noted that the participants and the organizers have enhancing skills and social productivity as the common goal while commending Governor AbdulRahman Abdul Razaq for his unwavering commitment to human capital development.



Talking about the profound impacts of words and actions of the information officers, and the importance of their roles, Olukoju said there is a need for constant refinement and adaptation in order to convey clear and accurate information.
She also talked about effective management of crisis, professionalism and having a positive and good relationship with the public while praising the governor’s visionary leadership and commending him for prioritizing human capital development.
Mr Michael Adebayo Oyelowo, a Director at the office of the Head of Service, also urged the participants to take what they have learned seriously while noting that it is important to commend Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for making funds available to train and retrain them from the resources that are inadequate.
Dr Saudat AbdulBaki and Mr Gbenga Okeowo also spoke on how to be a good image-maker and emphasizing the need to keep it in mind that crisis prevention is better than crisis managemeno
Governor AbdulRazaq’s Special Adviser and Counselor, Alhaji Saadu Salahudeen, who said training and retraining will help information officers to grow their knowledge base and improve their skills, also commended the governor for prioritizing human capital development.
