Over 800,000 women are living with fistula in the country with majority of them in the northern states, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , has disclosed.
A fistula is an abnormal connection between two body parts like an organ or blood vessel and another structure.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned the Programme Officer, UNFPA Adamawa state, Dr. Danladi Idrissa, disclosed this during the graduation ceremony of 50 fistula survivors at the Women Development Centre, Yola.
Dr. Idrissa added that UNFPA in conjunction with the Fistula Foundation and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development had since conducted surgical repair of about 265 cases out of which 225 were healed.
The remaining 40, he noted, required a high level of surgical operation which cannot be conducted in the state due to non-availability of the facilities needed for such.
He also urged parents not to marry off young girls in order to protect them from having fistula during childbirth and prevent them from committing suicide -Team@orientactualmags.com
