Petrol Subsidy : NLC Confirms Suspension Of ‘Nationwide Protest’

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has confirmed the suspension of the ‘nationwide protest’ that it had begun on Wednesday citing steps taken by President Bola Tinubu and the Senate.
This resolution was sequel to the decision taken during the National Executive Council meeting of the Congress.
NLC National Treasurer, Hakeem Ambali, in a short message on Thursday morning said, ‘Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesternight’.
Demonstrators had marched through Abuja, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Osogbo among other cities across the country on Wednesday. Thousands of people hit the streets in protest against removal of patrol subsidy, and the multiple demonstrations were largely peaceful. The protest coordinated by the organized Labour had those in Abuja pulling down the first gate of the National Assembly (NASS) complex and they forced their way into the premises. Earlier, the protesters led by the NLC president , Joe Ajaero and TUC president, Festus Osifo had asked security agents stationed at the legislative building to allow the angry workers access to NASS Complex to express their displeasure. Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume , who later addressed the protesters asked the labour union leaders to call off the nationwide protest and give the Senate one week to address their list of demands. Ndume said there was already a motion on the floor of the Senate by all senators to address issues that have to do with the FG and Labour unions. He urged the protesters to give the Senate one week to resolve the issues, after which the unions could return to the streets if they were unsatisfied with the solutions offered. In Bayelsa state ,the organized labour also staged a protest against removal of patrol subsidy ,they staged the protest march on Mbiama-Yenagoa Road from where they left for the Government House, Yenagoa. In Rivers state, the workers gathered at the NLC Secretariat, Port Harcourt to also show their displeasure with the Federal Government in respect of the removal of petrol subsidy. In Kwara state, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Muritala Saheed Olayinka and the TUC Chairman , Comrade Joseph Tunde, led the protest march in Ilorin, the state capital. In Kaduna state, workers converged on the state NLC secretariat and later left for the metropolitan areas to stage protest march.
