Presidency Urges Nigerians To Shun Coup Rumours Coz Of Its Detrimental Consequences
The presidency on Thursday urged Nigerians to shun coup rumours because it will have deleterious effects on the nation’s economy.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, who said this while appearing on Arise News’ Prime Time programme on Thursday evening, noted that unverified reports about national security can harm Nigeria’s image and negatively affect the country in respect of ‘investor confidence’.
‘When a country is looking for investment and the media are shouting ‘coup attempt,’ it scares investors away.
Stories like that can destroy the country’s reputation and economy. We need to wait for facts, evidence, not rumours’ Mr Onanuga submitted while urging the media and the public to allow the conclusion of official investigations before publishing sensitive stories.
He added that although, the military has confirmed an ongoing investigation into some arrests, no credible evidence has however linked them to a coup attempt at least for now.
Onanuga also argued that leaping to conclusions before official confirmation portends grave national consequences while also lamenting the growing appetite for sensationalism and online traffic and noting that not every piece of information is ‘fit to print’.
‘Some media outlets ran with the story for clicks and attention. But as patriotic Nigerians, we must know that what we report has implications for our economy and stability.
It is true people don’t always trust government, that happens everywhere in the world. But the media also have a social responsibility to be cautious and wait for facts’ he said-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
