Renewal License Fees: NBC Commends Debtor Media Organizations, Grants Them Respite

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has temporarily suspended the shutdown notice it issued in respect of some media organizations , eight days ago.

The NBC  had  announced decision to  revoke the licences of AIT, Silverbird TV, Raypower FM,  Rhythm FM, MITV, and broadcasting stations belonging to twenty one states including Lagos, Osun, Jigawa, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara and Kogi .

The licenses of the affected 52 media  organizations  were according to NBC  revoked  because they had  failed to take necessary steps to get them renewed

Team@orientactualmags.com  learned the  NBC Director-General , Balarabe Shehu Ilelah , who announced this in a statement on Friday , added that  the commission had received positive responses from the debtor media organizations, including big players in the broadcast industry.

Kwara state Commissioner for Communication, Hon. Bode Towoju,  had on Wednesday announced that the ₦22.5 million outstanding debts in respect of  licence renewal fees  for  Radio Kwara had been paid.

He had also added  that the state government had earlier paid ₦10m out of the initial ₦32.5m debts in September, 2021.

“Kwara state is blessed with a responsible and highly responsive governor. This debt was passed down from the previous administrations in the state since 2006’ Towoju had said.

NBC has commended the affected  media organizations  for their cooperative attitude.

‘Sequel to a follow-up meeting held with Executives of the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON), and other critical stakeholders in the industry, the commission has decided to temporarily suspend the shutdown of the indebted broadcast stations all over the country.

We express our profound appreciation to the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, the affected licensees and broadcast stakeholders for their responses and interventions. We, specifically, thank DAAR Communications Ltd and Silverbird TV/Rhythm FM for their responses.

The commission is not unaware of the difficulties this shutdown must have caused the operators and other stakeholders, but must state that the commission will always operate within the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap. N11, Laws of the Federation, 2004’  Balarabe  Ilelah said- Team@orientactualmags.com
