River Varsity Professor Acquitted Of Sexual Assault Charges
Professor David Ogbonna, a lecturer at the Department of Microbiology, Rivers state University, has been acquitted of sexual assault charges.
Recall that he was brought before a magistrate on June 28, 2022, and had sexual assault charges preferred against him.
A 21-year-old female student, Grace Ndamatin, had accused Professor David Ogbonna of sexually assaulting her in his office.
.
Magistrate Poromon Menenen of the Magistrates’ Court, Port Harcourt, on Monday acquitted Ogbonna of the sexual assault charges.
He said the prosecution team failed to prove that the female student was sexually assaulted.
Menenen noted that the evidence the defendant had claimed to have, was not presented in court and subsequently acquitted Prof Ogbonna of the charges.
‘I will tell you that I was not surprised at all that the judgment of this court came the way and the manner and the direction it did.
Because to some extent, the law is a bit logical and we knew from day one that in the absence of any evidence, you know upon which the ingredients of indecent sexual assault would be based.
There was no way the prosecution was going to succeed. The end result would always be the acquittal of the accused persons. And that is exactly what the court did’ Dr Emma Okah, one of the counsels for Prof Ogbonna, said-.Team@orientactualmags.com
