South Korea Opposition Leader, Lee Jae-Myung, Stabbed In Neck While Talking To Journalists In Busan
Mr. Lee Jae-myung ,who almost won the presidential election held in South Korea in 2022, has been stabbed in the neck and he is currently hospitalized.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that he was stabbed in the neck while talking to journalists during his visit to the city of Busan on Tuesday.
He reportedly sustained a 1cm laceration on the left side of his neck and he was quickly airlifted to the hospital but doctors have submitted that the wound is not life-threatening.
66-year-old man who attacked Mr Lee had reportedly approached him to ask for an autograph, before suddenly lunging forward to stab him. .
Mr Lee, who is the leader of Democratic Party of Korea, was addressing reporters at a news conference during his visit to a construction site in the port of Busan on Tuesday morning when the incident happened.
The attacker was immediately overpowered and arrested.
The weapon was an 18cm (7in) knife which the attacker said he bought online, police disclosed at a media briefing while promising to make him face charges.
Spokesman for Mr Lee’s party, Kwon Chil-seung said medical staff suspected injury to his jugular vein, which carries blood from the head to the heart while adding that he would have to undergo surgery as they were concerned about further bleeding.
‘After being transferred to Seoul National University Hospital, we plan to operate quickly. We strongly condemn the attack and consider it a clear act of democracy destruction’ he said.
‘This is an act of terror against Lee and a serious threat to democracy that should never occur under any circumstances . As to Lee’s condition, we are waiting for the medical staff’s assessment’ Kwon Chil-seung, an MP , who is a member of Democratic Party, told reporters outside the hospital.
59-year-old Mr Lee currently represents Incheon, a city bordering the capital of Seou, in South Korea’s legislature. He narrowly lost the 2022 presidential elections – by a mere 0.73% difference in votes – to Mr Yoon, making it the closest presidential race in the political history of South Korea.
Lee is expected to relaunch his presidential bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Since losing the presidential election, Mr Lee has been indicted on corruption and breach of trust charges, with prosecutors accusing him of allowing private developers to profit illegally from a property project while he was serving as Mayor of Seongnam, a city of 1 million people to the south of Seoul but he has denied the charges in question, submitting that they are politically motivated-Team@orientactualmags.com
