SSUCOEN President Urges Kwara Govt To Provide More Funding For Colleges Of Education

The National President of the Senior Staff Union in Colleges of Education, Nigeria (SSUCOEN), Comrade Danladi Ali Msheliza, has urged the Kwara state Government to increase the ‘monthly subvention’ for the colleges of education, and CAILS, while steps should also be taken to reposition them and construct perimeter fences to enhance security at the institutions in question.

During a recent visit to the Colleges of Education and College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS), Ilorin, in continuation of his nationwide tour of Colleges of Education in the country,  Comrade Danladi Ali Msheliza emphasized the need for full salary payments, rather than percentages, citing current economic hardships.

A statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com noted that he also reiterated that the union does not recognize Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) at the colleges, while students should rather pay service charges for specific facilities and services rendered adding  that ‘these payments are meant to cover the cost of providing those services, leaving little or no residual income to augment salary payment for  the staff’.

The SSUCOEN President urged the Kwara state Government to address the funding challenges facing the colleges of education and increase the ‘monthly subvention’ in order to make the tertiary institutions provide quality service to the students.

To reduce financial burden of running multiple colleges of education and CAILS in addition to other public tertiary institutions , he has also suggested total transmutation of the Kwara state College of Education, Ilorin, into a University of Education rather than establishing an entirely new university that would require significant investment in infrastructure, staff recruitment and operational cost.

‘Upgrading of the Kwara state College of Education (Technical), Lafiagi to a Federal College of Education is important. With this, the state will be focusing on fewer schools and provide adequate financial resources for their operations. The union will support in exploring this option more so that Kwara has not gotten a Federal College of Education since its creation’ he said.

Comrade Msheliza also  called for the repositioning of the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS), Ilorin by affiliating it  with relevant Educational regulatory agencies, this, he noted, will   enhance the recognition of the institution’s certificates, and promote  academic excellence and opportunities for its graduates.

The president also emphasized the need for CAILS to meet with national and international standards, ensuring that its programmes are accredited and respected.

‘By doing so, CAILS will increase its visibility, attract more students, and contribute significantly to the education sector’ he added.

The SSUCOEN President also urged the Kwara state Government to construct perimeter fences at the colleges of education in the state to strengthen security and protect life and property on campuses while urging Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to  use his good offices as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum   to explore appropriate windows available for such kinds of projects through TETFUND.

Comrade Danladi Ali Msheliza commended Governor AbulRahman AbdulRazaq for the bailouts given to the colleges of education in the state at intervals and for being the first state to inaugurate the 70 thousand minimum wage committee in the country–Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
