Strike: Moshood Ajao Picks Holes In NLC’s List Of Demands, Says Calling For End To ‘Police Presence’ At NURTW Headquarters ‘Irrelevant’
Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Moshood Ajao, has picked holes in the list of demands presented to the Federal Government by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, while stating the need for the trade union to steer clear of the internal conflict in the NURTW.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had last week declared a two-day warning strike, that would begin on Tuesday, September 5, to protest against the Federal Government for failing to address the challenges caused by the removal of petrol subsidy.
Alhaji Ajao in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com said it was a worrisome development to discover that the NLC had included an end to ‘police presence’ at the national headquarters of the NURTW at Garki 2, Abuja as one of the demands that was presented to the federal government.
Moshood submitted that ‘police presence’ at the NURTW headquarters was at the instance of the present exco of the Union while asserting that the tenure of Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa as National President of NURTW had ended on August 28, 2023.
NLC complaining about ‘police presence’ at the NURTW headquarters, which was at the invitation of the incumbent President, Alhaji Tajudeen Badiru Agbede with the purpose of maintaining law and order was therefore according to Alhaji Moshood Ajao an uncalled-for action.
He asserted that what had been done was in line with the constitution of the Union adding that the former President, Alhaji Baruwa and his successor , Alhaji Agbede are from the southwest. He also noted that the incumbent President enjoys the support of members of the union in the zone.
Alhaji Moshood also alleged that NURTW in the southwest suffered setbacks on Alhaji Baruwa’s watch citing his alleged high-handedess which had made five out of the six states in the zone to suspend the activities of NURTW, leaving only Ekiti state.
