Student Protest: Kwara Poly Announces Reopening Date After Temporary Closure

Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin which was shut down last month has announced a reopening date .

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the Director of the institution’s Information Division, Halimat Garba disclosed this in a statement she issued in Ilorin on Thursday.

She. also noted that management of the institution got the go-ahead from the Kwara State Government before announcing the reopening date.

‘The Management of Kwara State Polytechnic wishes to formally inform the entire Polytechnic community that the Kwara State Government has approved the reopening of the Polytechnic for academic and administrative work.

In line with this directive, the Polytechnic will resume on Monday, March 2, 2026. All staff and students are therefore urged to adhere to this directive and resume at the Polytechnic promptly on the stated date.

The Management appreciates both the staff and the students for their cooperation and understanding during the period of closure and looks forward to a productive and successful completion of the first semester 2025/2026 academic session’ the statement added.

Recall that tension was high at the institution last month after students scuffled with the police and the polytechnic was consequently shut down.

Students at the polytechnic had objected to the use of the institution’s campus as a temporary orientation camp for new members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the protest had left the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic injured.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had two days later announced the setting up of a 3-member investigation committee tasked with looking into the issue and identifying the remote and immediate causes of the student protest in question.

The committee was given two weeks to submit its report and the Rector of the Polytechnic, Engineer Abdul Jimoh Mohammed was asked to ‘immediately step aside’ from his role ‘until further notice’, while the most senior Deputy Rector, Dr Awolola Olabisi had since then been in charge of affairs of the institution albeit in acting capacity.

Engineer Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, who was appointed as Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin in October 2019, had, against all odds, gotten reappointed by the governor in October 2024-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
