Sunday Mbang, Methodist Prelate Emeritus, Dies At 86…President Buhari Offers Condolences

The Methodist Church Nigeria has announced the passing of Prelate emeritus, Sunday Mbang.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned this was done through an internal memo by The Rt. Revd. Dr. Babatunde A. Taiwo, Secretary of Conference, which was sent to all Archbishops/Bishops/Trustees/Lay Presidents of the church on Wednesday.
The memo noted that Dr. Mbang, who served as the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria from 2003 to 2011, passed away peacefully after an impactful Earthly Ministry of 44 years having enrolled at Trinity College, Umuahia in 1962.
In the memo, The Rt. Revd. Taiwo expressed the church’s condolences to the family of the late Prelate and the entire Methodist community in Nigeria.
‘He will surely and sorely be missed by his beloved Church, Methodist Church to which he gave spiritual, intellectual and servant leadership for more than two decades, and the entire Body of Christ in Nigeria and the Diasporas.
He also had the unique and special privilege of being accorded the status of ‘Spiritual Father of Akwa Ibom state’ Taiwo said.
He added that the late Emeritus Prelate was known for his commitment to the work of God and his advocacy for social justice and equity in the society and would be remembered as a great Christian leader who inspired many in Nigeria and beyond.
‘Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course’ the memo added.
The late Sunday Coffie Mbang was born on August 26, 1936 and he died on May 16 , 2023.
President Muhammadu Buhari has offered his condolences to all Methodists in Nigeria and across the world.
The President, in a statement issued in Abuja by his Media Adviser, Femi Adesina, also extended heartfelt condolences to the Mbang family , the government and people of Akwa Ibom state, and the entire body of Christ in Nigeria and worldwide.
He noted that the late Mbang was indeed a spiritual colossus beyond the shores of his fatherland.
President Buhari also noted that having served as the longest Leader of Methodist Church Nigeria, the first Methodist President of the Christian Association of Nigeria and the first Black President of World Methodist Council, among other pioneering positions, Dr. Mbang displayed ‘exemplary courage, forthrightness, wisdom, intellectualism and selflessness’ in his over six decades of service to God and humanity.
