As part of the measures and steps taken to address the issue of encroachment on lands belonging to tertiary Institutions in Kwara state, the state government has come up with the idea of setting up a committee to seriously tackle the menace .
Taking questions from journalists including Team@orientactualmags.com after giving his keynote speech during the 34th Media Parliament organized by the Kwara state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ at the Press Centre, Ilorin, which had as its theme: Reinvigorating Tertiary Education: Any Hope For Kwara? Dr. Alabi Afeez Abolore , who is the Commissioner Of Tertiary Education, disclosed that a decisive step had been taken in respect of encroachment on lands belonging to tertiary institutions in the state.
He added that Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq had since directed that a committee called ‘Land Management Committee’ should be constituted for this purpose.
Abolore , who had earlier noted in his keynote speech that total overhauling of ‘our tertiary education is a collective responsibility of all and sundry particularly the stakeholders that are directly involved in the activities’ , urged family , well-meaning individuals, alumni associations and others to ensure that they make meaningful contributions and give necessary supports including provision of financial, materials and human resources.
The Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq administration will according to him continue to promote education that is innovation-driven especially when it comes to teaching, research and community development, doing this, Abolore noted, will help ‘our graduates become employers of labour rather than job seekers after graduation and by extension improve the economy of the country’.
He also listed the achievements recorded by the ministry and the efforts made to make tertiary education in the state become better on Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrasaq’s watch to include implementation of Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPASS) for Academic Staff of Colleges of Education, Ilorin; Oro; Technical Lafiagi and CAILS Ilorin , payment of over N700million for seven months salary arrears owed some State-owned Tertiary Institutions including council of Legal Education , various infrastructural development and renovations across some selected institutions , approval of payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustment CONTEDISS salary structure across the state-owned Tertiary Institution and the approval of scholarship and bursary for Kwara state indigenes, noting that ‘this kind gesture is unprecedented in the history of our dear state’- Team@orientactualmags.com
