Unilorin Names Oloyede, Obafemi, Akanji As ‘Professors Emeriti’

Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB), Professor Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Prof. Olu Obafemi, and Prof. Musbau Akanji, who would have ordinarily been referred to as ‘retired professors’, made history on Thursday by becoming the first set of retired professors at the University of Ilorin to get the go-ahead to retain their title.

The University of Ilorin on Thursday granted the three distinguished academics the title of ‘professor emeritus’.

‘Emeritus status’ is an honorary category of appointment. This is done after retirement in recognition of their services to the university while they still remain part of the institution; they no longer receive a salary but can continue with their research and other things.

While other universities in the country had in the past granted the title of ‘professor emeritus’ to their former staff , this is arguably the first time the University of Ilorin will appoint ‘professors emeriti’..

Nigerians who have enjoyed such a privilege include Emeritus Professor J.A Akinpelu, University of Ibadan (2004), Emeritus Professor Kola Kusemiju, University of Lagos, Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs, University of Port Harcourt and Emeritus Professor Njidda Mamadu Gadzama, University of Maiduguri.

Professor Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede,

Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin,  Mr Kunle Akogun, disclosed in a statement he issued in Ilorin and made available to Team@orientactualmags.com  that the institution’s highest decision-making body, the senate, granted the title of ‘Professor Emeritus’ to Prof. Is’haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, Prof. Olu Obafemi, and Prof. Musbau Akanji during its 304th meeting on Thursday.

‘Emeritus Professor Oloyede, who retired from the University in October last year, is a former Vice -Chancellor of the University and the current Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB).

Emeritus Professor Obafemi, a renowned scholar of English and Dramatic Literature, also retired from the University in 2020.

Emeritus Professor Akanji, who, at different times, served as Vice-Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, and Federal University of Technology, Minna, is a renowned scholar of Biochemistry. He retired in 2021’ the statement said-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us? Do you want us to cover your event or programme?
