We’ve Delayed Appointment Of New Alaafin, Soun To Avoid Past Mistakes-Gov Makinde

Governor Seyi Makinde on Tuesday disclosed what had according to him caused the delay in appointing a new Alafin of Oyo and Soun of Ogbomoso  citing decision to follow due process and avoid a repeat of past mistakes.

It will be recalled that the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III , had left to fraternize with his ancestors on December 13, 2021, while the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi had followed suit on April 23, 2022.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned Governor Makinde disclosed this while swearing in Justice Iyabo Yerima  as new Chief Judge of Oyo state at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan , on Tuesday.

Makinde  added that  kingmakers in the two towns  in question have been told  that an institutional framework should be followed in the selection of a new Aalafin and Soun noting that ‘once due process is followed, things generally will work out more efficiently’.

‘We have gone through a situation where a king was removed by the judiciary in the state after he had been on the throne for over 22 years.

And I said to myself, not on my watch are we going to repeat the same mistakes. I will rather delay and have due process followed.

Then, if anybody decides to go to court after the emergence of the new traditional rulers, such an exercise might be a nullity.

I believe this is what we need in Nigeria right now – strong institutions.

But, we also need people to build them, people with experience, capacity and people with strong conviction to do what is right.

That is why the appointment of people like Justice Iyabo Yerima is important because she has experience in leadership’ he added.

Swearing in Yerima as Chief Judge of the state, Makinde noted that her appointment was in accordance with Section 271 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

The inauguration ceremony was according to him held after her appointment had been confirmed by the state House of Assembly.

Makinde, who promised to give Yerima  necessary supports to succeed, added that his administration had taken steps to ensure that the judiciary in the state works effectively.

In her acceptance speech, Yerima promised to take Judiciary in the state to a greater height while urging the state government to renovate courtrooms in the state- Team@orientactualmags.com
