2027: INEC Relaxes Hard Stance, Extends Deadline For Submission Of Names Of Candidates By 3 Days
Ahead of the 2027 General Election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has relaxed its hard stance and announced its decision to extend the deadline for submission of names of candidates by three days.
Recall that a top official of the electoral body, Mohammed Haruna, who had commented on the issue while talking to reporters on Saturday, had submitted that political parties had until midnight of Saturday to upload the names of their presidential and National Assembly candidates while noting that extension of deadline was not under consideration.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the electoral body in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner & Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee on Sunday however relaxed its hard stance and announced the decision to extend the deadline by three days.
‘The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the extension of the deadline for submission of lists of candidates for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, by political parties. The deadline for submission in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election being Saturday 11th July 2026 has been extended to midnight on Tuesday 14th July, 2026.
The decision to extend the deadline was based on appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council, on behalf of political parties who were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline.
The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its practices, while acting within the ambit of the law.
