Tribunal To Hear Peter Obi’s Petition Wednesday, Adjourns Until Tomorrow
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has adjourned until tomorrow, Tuesday , May 9 , 2023 .
The tribunal will continue the pre-hearing of separate petitions challenging the declaration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President-elect.
PDP, LP, and some other parties had rejected the 2023 presidential election outcome and had asked the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to annul Tinubu’s victory.
The petitioners include the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Labour Party, and its candidate, Peter Obi, the Action Alliance (AA), the Action Peoples Party (APP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The Action Alliance (AA) had since withdrawn its petition.
It will be recalled that Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had declared Asiwaju Bola Tinubu , who was the APC presidential candidate, winner of the Presidential Election held on February 25, 2023.
Tinubu had 8,794,726 votes , Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP presidential candidate, got 6,984,520 votes, Peter Obi had 6,101,533 votes while the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso got 1,496,687 votes.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the tribunal’s Inaugural sitting was held between 9.14am and 10.30am on Monday. The tribunal reconvened at 10:45am and attended to matters until 1:00pm.
The panel has scheduled the pre-hearing of the petitions submitted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM) for Tuesday while that of the Labour Party (LP) and its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi will be considered on Wednesday.
The tribunal has also asked all the parties to identify issues that they would be objecting to before the next pre-hearing session while noting that the pre-hearing in the petition of the Action Peoples Party (APP) challenging the presidential election outcome will come up on May 10 .
The five-member panel of justice led by Justice Haruna Tsammani on Monday has done this to enable the applications in the matter to be ready.
A dramatic scene was also enacted during the proceedings of the tribunal on Monday at 10:48am and the dramatis personae were Governor Simon Lalong and the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Haruna Tsammani.
The Plateau state governor had immediately after the first petition was mentioned, stood up to announce himself as President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s representative.
‘My Lords, my name is Simon Lalong and I am here to represent Tinubu’ he had said..
‘You cannot represent an individual. Tinubu is not a corporation that would need a representative’ Justice Haruna however submitted.
Governor Lalong subsequently announced himself as representative of the ruling party.
