Cabinet Nominees: Kwarans Focus Attention On House Of Assembly Ahead Of Tomorrow’s Plenary Session

Concerns raised over Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s  list of cabinet nominees have made residents and citizens of Kwara state focus attention on the state parliament as the lawmakers get set to assemble in plenary session tomorrow, Monday, August 14, 2023.

Recall that the State House of Assembly had  on July 27, disclosed that the governor has sent a letter  to the parliament containing names of his cabinet nominees.

Speaker Yakubu Salihu Danladi’s spokesman,  Mr. Sheu Abdulkadir Yusuf  had noted in a statement that  the governor had  made thirty  cabinet nominations including  20 commissioners and 10 Special Advisers.

However, the state House of Assembly announcing postponement of legislative activities indefinitely on Monday, July 31 naturally aroused people’s curiosity.

Kwara state  PDP  had also in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com by its Publicity Secretary, Prince Tunji Morounfoye alleged that  in actual sense there was no correspondence between the governor and the parliament in respect of cabinet nominations.

 ‘We at the PDP put it to the Kwara state APC regime led by Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq that there was actually no  list of cabinet nominees  sent to the KWHA as alleged by the NGOs against the Kwara state APC regime. We can safely say this ‘motion without movement’  is a clear indication of another ‘sakamanje’ in a long line of deceitful dealings with Kwarans, since the beginning of the unfortunate kwara state APC regime led by Mal. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq’ the statement had alleged.  

‘The Fifth Alteration (No.23) which amended the Constitution, requires the president and governors to submit the names of persons nominated as Ministers or Commissioners within 60 days of taking the oath of office for confirmation by the Senate or the State Houses of Assembly; and for related matters.

 As clearly stipulated by the constitution, the governor of Kwara state is mandated to submit names  of the people nominated as commissioners to the Kwara state House of assembly (KWHA) within sixty days of  being sworn in as governor. 

Today is the 8th of August and we had all expected the screening of nominees that the governor purportedly sent to the KWHA to have been completed or at least be ongoing, rather unfortunately only for us to be told that the KWHA has postponed plenary sessions till further notice.

If the National Assembly (NASS) can sit even on Saturdays and other days  that they normally do not hold plenary sessions, in order to hold confirmation hearings for ministerial nominees, then why should the Kwara state legislators abandon their duties and go on leave at this crucial period. This is dereliction of duty and a waste of public funds from where they are being paid’ the party had added. 

Mr Sheu Abdulkadir Yusuf   had however, in separate statement, clarified and asserted that the   temporary suspension of legislative activities had nothing to do with the anticipated ‘confirmation hearings’ but rather caused by a technical issue that was being addressed.

Alhaji Kareem Olayiwola,  who is the Clerk of the  House of Assembly, announced during the weekend that the lawmakers would assemble in plenary session tomorrow, Monday,  August 14 , 2023, and this had since made Kwarans to focus attention on the state parliament and look forward to getting to know those who were lucky to get nominated as commissioners by the governor-Team@orientactualmags.com
