Chairman of Kwara State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr Suleiman Rotimi, has submitted that doctors in Kwara State are being underpaid, overworked, and subjected to excessive salary deductions.
He added that doctors in the state are among the least paid in the country.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Dr Rotimi made these remarks in Ilorin on Monday during the press conference organized as part of activities for the 2026 Physician’s Week, which has as its theme ‘Securing the Future of Medicine in Nigeria’.
Dr Rotimi also raised concerns over manpower shortages, poor welfare, excessive workloads, and alleged unauthorized salary deductions affecting doctors in the state.
‘The doctors are underpaid, overworked, and over-deducted. Some doctors have between N30,000 and N50,000 deducted from their monthly salaries, despite unpaid allowances and poor remuneration’ he said.
He urged the state government to urgently address these issues, noting that Nigeria’s doctor-to-patient ratio is currently about one doctor to more than 9,000 patients, with the situation being even worse in some parts of Kwara State.
‘The recommendation from the World Health Organization is one doctor to 600 patients’ he noted.
Commenting on the ongoing industrial dispute between doctors and the state government, Dr Rotimi said the union welcomes a resolution because ‘when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. The patients are the ones suffering from this’.
He also emphasized the need for improved mental health support, confidential medical services, safer workplaces, and protection against violence for healthcare workers-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
