Isese Day: Security Agents Keep Watchful Eye On Iyemoja River In Kwara
Security agents including cops, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers , Department of State Services officers and soldiers kept a watchful eye on Yemoja river in Oko Olowo area of Ilorin, Kwara state, on Sunday.
Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, has been in the news lately following media reports of plans by traditional religion worshippers to hold one festival or another in the ancient town.
Some residents of the state capital had however voiced opposition to this and asked the traditional religion worshippers to stay away from the city understandably because Ilorin is predominantly Muslims.
Traditional religion worshippers especially those in Yoruba land, celebrated the annual ‘Isese Day, on Sunday, August 20, 2023, and some among them had disclosed plans to hold the festival in the state of harmony.
The police had however a few days ago, told those planning to hold ‘Isese Day’ in Ilorin to choose another location and stay away from the state at least for now while citing ‘unfavourable’ security situation.
Interestingly , both the traditional religion worshippers that had stated readiness to dare consequences and converge on the riverbank for the isese festival and Islamic clerics that had threatened to stop them from doing such a thing stayed away from the controversial river on Sunday.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Ebbunoluwarotimi Adelesi, who led the security agents to the river bank, said this was done to keep peace and ensure security of lives and property.
‘The security agents are here to maintain peace; we are not here to deprive anyone of his or her fundamental human rights. They have been drafted to this place since yesterday to protect the people of the state.
The security personnel are here to maintain peace. We have to be at alert as a result of what the two sides are saying. We cannot allow the security and peace of the state to be breached.
