Benue Assembly Passes Resolution Recommending Grace Adagba’s Suspension As SUBEB Chairman
The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a resolution recommending Dr Grace Adagba’s suspension as Executive Chairman of Benue State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) .
She has been asked to step aside in order to allow an investigation into the allegations raised against her sequel to recent recruitment exercise for primary school teachers in the state.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that the resolution was sequel to the motion moved by the Majority Whip, Peter Ipusu during the plenary session that was held in Markurdi on Thursday.
21 lawmakers voted in support of the motion while 5 people opposed it.
The motion which was seconded by Alfred Berger added that the chairman lacks the integrity to continue to run the affairs of the board.
‘The chairman should step aside and hand over to the Permanent Member and allow the house to carry out its investigation’ Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh submitted while announcing the constitution of a seven-man committee to investigate the recruitment exercise and report to the house within seven days.
Ipusu added that the house of assembly had earlier adopted resolutions that directed the agency to suspend the recruitment exercise to allow an investigation into the controversies that had sprang up but noted that this directive was ignored.
The lawmaker added that a day after this resolution was passed by the house of assembly, the chairman released a statement announcing that new cut-off marks have been allocated to the various local governments based on their performance in the computer-Based Test conducted by the board and subsequently shortlisted additional names for physical screening.
He expressed worry that the statement issued by SUBEB was not only reactionary but amounted to disrespecting the house of assembly and shunning its resolutions.
While seconding the motion, Alfred Berger had submitted that the law establishing the board gives powers to the Local Government Education Authorities to recruit teachers.
Majority Leader of the house of assembly, Saater Tiseer had however in a countermotion argued that the chairman should be given a fair hearing.
Dr Grace, he added, had been invited to appear before the lawmakers and she was at the assembly complex at 10 am as directed.
Tiseer advised his colleagues not to make decisions based on prejudice but suggested that the House of assembly should take actions in line with the Constitution while the countermotion was seconded by Anthony Agom (PDP/Okpokwu)-Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
