Tense Atmosphere In Osun, 5 Reportedly Dead As Union Members Fight Over Control Of Motor Parks

For the better part of Monday, August 24, 2026, a tense situation existed in  Ikire, Irewole local government, Osun State, shop owners in  the town voluntarily closed their doors while people also returned home quickly as a result of safety fears.

Rival factions led by Kazeem Oyewale, who is popularly called Asiri Eniba and Nurudeen Wakeel aka Alowonle have for months now been locked in violent leadership and turf struggles for the control of motor parks across Osun State.

While Eniba is seen as an APC member, Alowonle is considered as a member of Accord Party.

Members and leaders of the two factions in the state chapter of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) are fighting over the control of motor parks in the state and that of Ikire took a dangerous dimension on Monday with five people reportedly becoming casualties.

Three commercial bus drivers and two passersby were reportedly killed at Naira and Kobo Garage, Ikire.

Head of Divisional Police Station in the town, Mr. Olatona Bamidele has been accused of supporting one of the factions to take over the Naira and Kobo Garage.

Team@orientactualmags.com reports that there may be a worsened tense atmosphere in the state following a return to fight over the control of local government secretariats by members of APC and members of PDP in the state.

What stood as the starting point for the seeming unending political tension in the state was the ruling delivered by the Court of Appeal, Akure, Ondo State on February 10, 2025. There was also another one by the same Court of Appeal, Akure, Ondo State on June 13, 2025.

The two separate court rulings centered on the status of the local government chairmen and councilors that were elected on October 15, 2022, and those who were elected on February 22, 2025.

Those who were elected on October 15, 2022 are APC members while the 2025 LG officials are PDP members.

The PDP LG chairmen and councilors and the APC chairmen and councilors are asserting authenticity of ‘status’.

The state PDP and the ruling Accord Party are members of the same ‘family’.

Reacting to the simmering tension on Monday, Osun State APC chairman, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal asserted that the APC chairmen and councilors are the legitimate occupants of the local government secretariats while urging the security agencies to take proactive measures and protect  lives and property.

‘I urge the security agencies to protect APC-led ALGON officials, council workers and all lawful occupants of local government secretariats across Osun.

If the Osun State government has credible intelligence of planned attacks, it should hand it over to security agencies for investigation, not use it to intimidate political opponents or create tension.

There must be no repeat of the alleged treatment meted out to late Remi Abass.

Governor Adeleke should remember that he is the governor of all Osun people. Political differences must be resolved through dialogue and constitutional means, not violence, intimidation or force.

Osun needs peace, justice and responsible leadership. No political victory is worth the blood or freedom of any citizen.
