Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole ,has submitted that all things being equal, the institution would soon get its transportation system enhanced through the introduction of electric buses.
Professor Egbewole, who said this while talking to journalists including Team@orientactualmags.com during the iftar dinner he hosted at his official residence in Ilorin, added that ‘our colleagues in the electrical engineering department are already working on this’.
Muslims are ordered to fast from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan and Iftar is the evening meal they take after the sun has gone down while an electric bus is propelled using electric motors as opposed to an internal combustion engine.
The Vice-Chancellor also said other interim measures are being taken to address transport challenges faced by students and staff of the institution.
‘We are considering the idea of introducing electric buses and our colleagues in the electrical engineering department are already working on this model and we hope that part of the research grants received will go into that, however, in the interim, we will inject more busses into the system, we also have some people who want to make more buses available.
Also from the gate to the campus, we have come up with a smooth ride. We are equally looking forward to the Kwara state government completing the ongoing flyover project at Tipper Garage and this will also help a lot’ he said.
Egbewole, who was flanked by other principal officers of the university, has also disclosed that the institution would be sending sports teams to the World University Games, a multi -sport event supported by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) which is scheduled to hold in Chendu ,China from July 28 to August 8 2023.
‘We are a sport -loving university and we will support sports in every way, our contingent would participate in the upcoming World University Games, we will continue to support sporting activities because we believe the health of our students is important and sport has a way of impacting positively on people’s health’ he said.
While giving reasons for not recording physical participation during the matriculation ceremony that was recently held by the university, Egbewole said this was done to make ‘our students realize that they can relate with their leaders from anywhere in the world in line with our smart agenda’.
He also disclosed that the university has gotten 100 million naira as research grants from TETFUND which has also according to him recognized the institution as one of the innovation hubs
