Africa’s 1st Female TV Announcer, Anike Agbaje-Williams, Turns 87
Mrs. Anike Agbaje-Williams has a historic achievement under her belt-the first female television announcer in Africa.
She turns 87 today, Monday, October 23 , 2023.
Anike , who was born on October 23, 1936, was a pioneer staff of the Western Nigeria Television Service (WNTS) which hit the airwaves on Saturday ,October 31, 1959, and she was the first female television announcer and broadcaster in Africa.
She rose to become a producer and director of programmes before retiring from the Nigerian Television Authority in 1986. .
Recall that the Federal Government had established the Nigerian Television Authority network service and acquired all TV stations in the country including Western Nigeria Television Service (WNTS) in 1975.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Mrs. Anike’s career as a TV announcer and newsreader was sequel to the absence of a male colleague who was expected to play the role and she was asked to take his place .
