For The 3rd Time In 19 Years, Former VP Atiku Abubakar Leaves PDP, Cites Intractable Intra Party Conflict
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has ended his membership of the PDP noting that he had taken the decision to quit the party with ‘a heavy heart’.
Recall that the former Vice President, who is the Waziri Adamawa, is one of the leaders of the ADC.
Recall also that ADC, a political party that is getting positioned as a significant political force in the country, was a few days ago unveiled and presented as the party that will serve as a platform for those who have formed ‘opposition alliance’ against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Atiku’s resignation from the PDP was made known through a letter sent to the PDP chairman, Jada Ward 1, Jada Local Government, Adamawa State, which was dated Monday, July 14, 2025.
Atiku’s Special Assistant on Media, Abdul Rasheeth, also made a copy of the letter available on X.com on Wednesday.
‘I am writing to formally resign from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the party.
Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.
As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision’ he submitted while noting that the intractable intra party conflict in the PDP has weakened the party.
‘However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.
I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again, for the opportunities and support’ he added.
This is the third time that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar would be leaving PDP for other political parties.
Recall that he left the party for Action Congress ahead of the 2007 General Election, and he emerged as AC presidential candidate on December 20, 2006. He however returned to PDP in October 2010.
Also, on February 2, 2014, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar left the PDP to become a founding member of APC, but returned to the party in 2018.
In the two times that he had left the PDP, Atiku’s new political parties had failed to secure election victory at an instance and succeeded in securing election victory at another instance.
AC lost the 2007 presidential election while the APC, a product of an ‘opposition alliance’, won the 2015 presidential election--Team@orientactualmags.com Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
