Peeing After Sex Can’t Prevent Pregnancy -Gynecologists

Peeing after having sexual intercourse cannot stop a woman from becoming pregnant, gynecologists have submitted while adding that only medically approved contraceptive methods can effectively prevent pregnancy.

.

The reproductive health experts noted that such misconceptions not only expose women to unplanned pregnancies but also contribute to rising cases of unsafe abortions and maternal complications in the country.

Team@orientactualmags.com learned that Aniekan Abasiattai, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, who was one of the gynecologists that made the clarification and assertion, explained that in a female’s body, the pathway for urination and the one where sperm enters to fertilize the egg are different, there is therefore no relationship between the urinary tract and conception.

‘The answer is no, there’s nothing like that. In fact, there is absolutely nothing like that.

There is a difference in the pathway between where a woman urinates and where sperm cells enter to fertilise the egg. They are completely different. There is no relationship between the urinary tract and conception—absolutely none.

For a woman, where urine is formed and expelled is entirely different from the reproductive tract where conception takes place. There is no direct relationship at all’ the university Don submitted when asked if peeing after sex can prevent pregnancy.

The researcher on Community Obstetrics, Fetomaternal Medicine and Reproductive Health, also added that even if a woman urinates 100 times immediately after sex, it cannot influence conception.

‘The only possible link could be indirect—for instance, if a woman has a pelvic infection that blocks the tubes. But that is not from the urinary tract itself. So, there is no direct relationship between urination and pregnancy prevention’ he added.

‘I am not aware of any properly conducted scientific study that has shown the benefits of peeing after sex in relation to pregnancy prevention.

If you are talking about urinary tract infections, peeing after sex does not reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections either. Sexually, the orifice for urine is different from the orifice for intercourse, so, again, there is no direct relationship.

People have said a lot of things and postulated many theories, but I am not aware of any study that has clearly proven the advantages of women peeing immediately after sex’ the University of Uyo professor added.

The Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology however, stressed that contraception methods remain the medically proven methods of preventing pregnancy.

‘There are natural or traditional methods, such as periodic abstinence (timing intercourse with the woman’s cycle), the withdrawal method, breastfeeding (lactational amenorrhea method), and natural family planning.

Then, we have modern methods, which are more effective and commonly advocated. These include: Hormonal methods, such as pills, injectables, and implants (inserted under the arm). These prevent pregnancy by interfering with hormonal cycles. Also, we have intrauterine devices inserted into the womb to prevent fertilisation or implantation. Lastly, we have the permanent methods, which are sterilisation (tying or cutting the fallopian tubes of women to prevent sperm and egg from meeting and vasectomy for men, which involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens, the tube that carries sperm from the testis.

All these modern contraceptive methods are very effective, safe, and have enormous advantages. Of course, each method has its own way of working, but the basic principle is to prevent sperm from meeting the egg’ he said.

Also giving his take on the issue, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Chris Aimakhu submitted that there is no scientific evidence that shows that peeing after sex can prevent pregnancy.

He likened this to the wrong notion that if a man pees immediately after sex it can prevent sexually transmitted infections.

‘Again, there is no scientific proof of these things. The only way to prevent pregnancy is through contraception. Not peeing after sex. When sperm is deposited into the vagina, it goes through the vagina into the uterus, then into the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation can occur.

Urine, on the other hand, comes from a completely different tract. Where urine comes out and where sperm travels in a woman are two different places. Urination is not a form of contraception. It doesn’t prevent pregnancy—it’s a myth.

Sperm and urine do not mix. Peeing does not flush out sperm because they go through different passages. The urethra, where urine comes out, is located above the vaginal opening where sperm enters. So, the idea that urine can flush out sperm is simply not true.

Some people believe different things due to culture or hearsay, but scientifically, urination is not a form of contraception’ the university Don said-Team@orientactualmags.com
