Ajibola Basiru Withdraws From 2026 Osun Gubernatorial Race
APC National Secretary, Barrister Ajibola Basiru, a former senator, has announced his withdrawal from the 2026 Osun State gubernatorial race.
Barrister Ajibola Basiru, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, made this disclosure on Saturday during the inauguration of the secretariat of his political support group, the Alubarika Movement.
Gubernatorial election is scheduled to hold in the state on August 8, 2026, while barring unforeseen circumstances, the state APC gubernatorial primary election will hold on December 13.
‘Considering the enormous responsibilities of my current office as National Secretary of our great party and after due consultations with our esteemed leaders and stakeholders, particularly, the Leader of our party and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it has become necessary to emphatically state that I shall not be contesting the 2026 Osun State governorship election’ he submitted.
The former senator also noted that his decision to withdraw from the race ‘does not signify a withdrawal from our shared progressive visions in any way’ adding that it was rather ‘a renewed pledge to deepen my commitment to continuing working with our leaders and all members of the Alubarika Movement and the APC in Osun State and Nigeria as a whole to nurture and support emerging political leaders in the APC who will renew the hopes of the good people of Nigeria in alignment with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’.
The Alubarika House, he added, would serve as a meeting point for his supporters and a venue for empowerment programmes while announcing the donation of N50 million as a take-off grant for the initiatives.
Osun State APC gubernatorial aspirants include Mr. Bola Oyebamiji; Mr Babatunde Oralusi, former Senator Babajide Omoworare; Otunba Iyiola Omisore; Prince Dotun Babayemi, Mr Benedict Alabi; Dr Akin Ogunbiyi; and Barrister Kunle Adegoke (SAN).
