Anambra Govt Releases Letter To Justify Calls For Peter Obi’s Withdrawal From 2027 Presidential Race

Anambra State Government has called on Mr Peter Obi to fulfill his public commitment and withdraw from the 2027 presidential race without delay citing disputed claims in respect of his financial legacy and past unfulfilled pledges.

To substantiate its claims, the state government has released archival documents, including a 2006 letter regarding unpaid salary arrears at the Anambra State Water Corporation.

Recall that Mr Peter Obi, who is the NDC presidential candidate, has continued to face criticism over his past comments including the one he had promised to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it is established that his administration left debt or owe salaries during his governorship in Anambra State.

Mr Peter Obi served as governor of Anambra State from March 17, 2006, to March 17, 2014.

Recall also that Mr Peter Obi had asked Anambra State government to fault his assertion that his administration left no unpaid debts, salaries, pensions or contractor liabilities if they could.

The NDC  presidential candidate, who had taken to social media to respond to claims by the Anambra State Government that his administration left debts, including a N2 billion ecological loan, had dismissed the claims as false, saying his administration cleared historical gratuities and arrears worth more than N35 billion.

Mr Peter Obi also asserted that there were no outstanding salaries, gratuities or pensions when he left as governor adding that contractors had also been paid for projects that were taken to completion.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga had in an X.com post last week Wednesday, asked Mr Peter Obi to honour his word and back out of the 2027 presidential race without delay.

Team@orientactualmahs.com learned that Anambra State Government also in an X.com post today, September 22, 2026, joined the presidency in asking Mr Peter Obi to honour his word.

‘When will Peter Obi quit presidential campaign?

He (Obi) vowed to quit the presidential race if proven he left Anambra in debt.

As governor, he vowed to resign if workers weren’t paid on time. He broke both. He left office in 2014 with heavier arrears’ the state government submitted while making a letter dated April 25, 2006, available.

The letter in question was allegedly signed by Chuks Iloegbunam, the then Chief of Staff, Government House, Awka

The letter, titled ‘GUBERNATORIAL PREROGATIVE’ made a ‘special appeal’ to the then Governor Peter Obi to settle salary arrears owed to workers of the Anambra State Water Corporation.

‘Since it is Your Excellency’s unchanging desire to achieve a better future for our children and children’s children, please, Sir, bear in mind that officials of the Water Corporation also have children who are looking to your compassionate leadership. If the President listens with compassion to your appeals on behalf of the children of Anambra State, I am 200 percent sure that you will hearken to the cries of the children whose parents work for the Water Corporation and end their ordeal. Thank you most sincerely for that.

The monthly salary of the Water Corporation comes to something around N15 million every month. Because you have a most busy schedule, I appeal to you to please include the Water Corporation in the league of Government parastatals that are paid through subventions. In this way, the workers will not come to Your Excellency’s office every month to distract your attention on account of unpaid salaries’ the workers submitted in the said letter while citing Mr Peter Obi’s campaign manifesto, in which he had pledged to resign from his position as governor ‘if there is any case where workers are not paid as and when due’.

‘Your Excellency, Water Corporation workers were last paid in February.
