General Election:  Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi Urges Traditional Rulers To Adopt ‘Neutral Position’ , Cautions Politicians Against Political Violence

The Arole Oduduwa & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR Ojaja II, has warned politicians against involvement in political violence before, during and after the 2023 General Election.

The 2023 General Election starts off with the presidential and national assembly elections tomorrow.

Ooni Ogunwusi, who is the Co-chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN), made this call in a ‘State of the Nation’ speech at his Ile Oodua Palace, Ile-Ife on Thursday.

‘No politician can force himself or herself on Nigerians and that is why our politicians should avoid being desperate in their quest for power. If you don’t win today, it may be your turn tomorrow and this is why I am imploring political office seekers not to destroy tomorrow with inactions of today.

I call on Nigerians especially the youth population which is the largest to partake in the polls not to violate any of the election process. The country has already been through a lot including the recent scarcity of fuel among others, we cannot afford more trouble.

The umpires especially the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must do the needful to give Nigerians free fair and credible polls, while the security agencies should maintain their status as a defender of our constitution by creating an enabling environment and not bullying the voters.

For us as traditional rulers, I implore us to remain apolitical and neutral as a father to all politicians and voters. We must not be seen promoting political parties or the politicians’ the Ooni said.

The Ooni’s media aide, Mr Moses Olafare noted in a statement made available to Team@orientactualmags.com that the prominent traditional ruler had on Wednesday during an interactive session with politicians in Ifeland  at his Ile-Oodua palace declared that he has no preferred candidates ahead of the forthcoming elections.

He condemned the reported violent attacks recorded in some parts of the country especially Ile-Ife,  noting that Nigerians must be patriotic in their conduct always, while urging the security agencies to ensure the arrest of perpetrators of violence and other criminal activities before, during and after the polls in the interest of law and order- Team@orientactualmags.com
