The Igbomina Professionals Association (IPA), which comprises professionals who are indigenes of Igbomina communities in Kwara state, has given reasons why Igbominaland should be considered as the best location for the proposed Kwara state University of Education.
Speaking during the press briefing he presided over in Ilorin , President, Igbomina Professionals Association (IPA), Barrister Bayo Atoyebi , who noted that the IPA members at home and abroad, have used their hard-earned resources and expertise to proffer solutions to problems bedeviling our communities including insecurity, poor education, poor healthcare delivery, unemployment, and communal clashes, added that they were excited to receive the news of plans by the state government to establish a new university like every well-meaning Kwaran.
IPA has also given reasons why the proposed Kwara state University of Education should be sited in Igbomina land and not anywhere else.
‘We submitted a memorandum as requested by the 11-man panel constituted on November 1, 2023 by our exemplary governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq but we are disturbed by opinions expressed by some groups demanding that the proposed University should be located in Ilorin, the state capital ,where more than 90 percent of the state government and Federal institutions are presently located.
In order to drive home our points, we would like to trace the history of higher education in the state from its creation on May 27, 1967.
The first higher institution owned by the state, the Kwara state College of Technology (now Kwara state Polytechnic), was established in 1973 and sited in Ilorin, the state capital with two of its foundation schools; the School of Engineering and the School of Management and Vocation, located in Ilorin.
The University of Ilorin, established by the Federal Military government in 1975, is also located in Ilorin, the state capital.
It is pertinent to note that the College of Education, Ilorin, was originally conceived and established as College Education, Oro, an Igbomina community, but located in Ilorin.
The Kwara state University, Malete, is located in Ilorin.
It is also important to note that KWASU Teaching Hospital, formerly General Hospital, and the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital are all in Ilorin . Also, the Kwara state College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (KWCAILS), Kwara state College of Nursing and Midwifery, Kwara state Football Academy, Kwara state College of Aviation, Kwara state College of Agriculture, and the Michael Imoudu National Institute of Labour Studies (MINILS), and the newly established Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital are all in Ilorin’ he said.
The group also argued that seeking to locate the new institution in Ilorin, the state capital, will be unjust and not promote justice, equity, and fairness.
IPA added that the concentration of institutions and other amenities in Ilorin have led to the uneven development and huge rural-urban migration in the state-Team@orientactualmags.com
