Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state on Friday confirmed that prominent Nigerians were in London to confer with him and the PDP governors that had now gotten recognized as his loyalists.
Team@orientactualmags.com learned the governor said this on arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government , Rivers state.
Wike, who confirmed that Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi and former President Olusegun Obasanjo met with them , noted that making Nigeria a better place for all has remained their priority.
Wike had been away in the United Kingdom where he spent five days.
He has gotten recognized as the ‘man of the moment’ when it comes to Nigerian politics.
While in London, the three most prominent presidential candidates; Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, PDP, and Mr Peter Obi, Labour Party held separate meetings with him.
Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Wike had sought for the PDP presidential nomination but lost this to Atiku in the presidential primary election held at the Eagle Square, Abuja in May.
The Rivers state governor had later sought to get named as Vice Presidential candidate but Atiku eventually chose Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, a development that got Wike incensed.
Defection rumours had since then swirled around him and the meetings he had held with LP and APC bigwigs accentuated insinuations that he was planning to leave the PDP.
“ We met with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC and we met with our leader, former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.
We met with the presidential candidate of Labour Party. We also met with our presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. I can confirm that this is the first time as a team that we are meeting with him. For whatever it is worth, consultation is ongoing. Whatever we are talking about, is for the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians. It is not parochial and or centers on one person or group of persons. We believe that with what is going on; it will be for the interest of Nigerians at the end of the day’ Wike said on Friday.
He added that leadership should not be about one individual and the interest of his family, but rather about the collective interest.
‘Consultation is still ongoing. Never mind some people who do not believe in the existence of this country. Some people who are just interested in their own matters. Some people only know how to produce their sons as governors and members of the National Assembly . It’s unfortunate that we are in a country where a man finishes eight years as a governor and brings his own sons as a governor and as a member of the National Assembly. What example are they showing to others? Leadership is not about you and your family. Leadership is about everybody.
It’s only in this part of the world that you can see that, when we are talking about poverty everywhere. These are people who do not mean well for Nigeria.
The only identity they have is religion and ethnicity, nothing more. It’s either, I’m a Christian or I’m a Moslem, I’m a Fulani or I’m an Igbo. Nigeria cannot move forward except they think it will be them. That’s where we are.
We are in a country where someone with primary school certificate can get appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs. That tells you how bad this country has become. But with our consultation, all these will be a thing of the past. No amount of insult or blackmail will deter us from doing the right thing. We are determined to right the wrong’ he said.
Also speaking, Governor Ortom said they met with renowned persons in the last few days because of their belief that Nigeria was in distress and that concerted effort was required to rescue it. He added that well-meaning Nigerians need to work together to ensure that the country survives.
‘For us, we are looking at the larger picture. Nigeria today is in distress. It is about what we can do. No man or woman alone can get it right for our country.
We are looking at how we can harness ideas and put ourselves together to ensure that we get out of the present challenges we are in Nigeria today. From top to bottom, consider what has happened from 2015 and where we are today. So, what we are doing is a concern that we have for our country, Nigeria. This is beyond partisan politics. We are looking for how we can come together and find a way of ensuring that Nigeria survives. Nigeria is on a drip, Nigeria is on oxygen and it is about how we can get out of this. Consultation is going on, no concrete decision yet we are still going to meet to ensure that the project Nigeria works’’ he said.
