Gov Abdulrazaq Orders Closure Of Kwara Polytechnic To Ease Tension

Kwara State Government has ordered the closure of the state Polytechnic, Ilorin to ease tension.

Recalled that tension was high at the institution on Tuesday after students scuffled with the police.

Students at the polytechnic had objected to the use of the institution’s campus as a temporary orientation camp for new members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and the protest had left the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic injured.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Tuesday ordered the closure of the polytechnic to prevent further breakdown of law and order and ensure safety of lives and property.

Acting Registrar of the institution, Mr AbdulHafis Amin announced the closure of the polytechnic in a statement he made available to Team@orientactualmags.com on Tuesday.

‘The Polytechnic had earlier been designated by the state government as a temporary NYSC orientation camp due to prevailing security challenges in the state.

While previous batches of corps members were accommodated during periods when students were on break or yet to fully resume, the current orientation exercise coincided with full academic activities.

To ensure a smooth NYSC orientation exercise and prevent any breakdown of law and order, the management granted students a three-week break effective from Monday, January 19, 2026’ he said.

Some among the students had however opposed the idea of embarking on a fresh 3-week break having just returned to campus after the yuletide.

Police were invited to stop the protesting students but while trying to fire tear gas to break up the protest, they overzealously allowed it to affect some parts of the campus, including the student hostels.

‘The action affected several students and staff, including the polytechnic’s Chief Security Officer, who sustained injuries’ the statement added.

The management of the institution has urged students, staff, and stakeholders to ‘remain calm and cooperative’ as ‘we continue to engage with the relevant authorities to resolve this matter amicably and swiftly’-Team@orientactualmags.com  Do you have any information you wish to share with us?
